MJ, gone but not forgotten.

As a friend pointed out to me via twitter, it is bizarre that a blog that has the amazing title “Pop Cultured” failed to post about MJ. Well, when the shocking events transpired last week, I was making sure 170 filmmakers, cinephiles, programmers, (yada, yada, yada…) were being sufficiently entertained, so I didn’t get a chance to reflect. But, said friend had a good point, so I figured it was better late than never.

Since nostalgia is a constant theme in our posts, I think this one should focus on all the good times I had with Michael… Just to be clear, Michael was never there with me—I want that to be PERFECTLY clear.

My Michael memories after the jump!!

I definitely grew up listening to the Jackson 5, and Thriller was a constant throughout the years, in fact it was my sister's first CD ever. We listened to it all the time—it’s really very amusing to see an 8-year-old girl recite the Vincent Price section of that song. I vividly remember watching the “making of” the "Thriller" video with our babysitter, Frances--John Landis and all. I really didn’t believe that Michael from the beginning of the video and Zombie Michael were one and the same, it took some convincing from my older brother. I also think I had to be convinced that Thriller Michael was the same person as “Black or White” Michael.

For some reason, all of MJ’s major television appearances, comebacks, and video premiers take up space in my brain. Some of this space is of course inhabited by the famous Diane Sawyer interview. My favorite part of said interview is Michael saying “Oh! Liz is here?!?” Sadly, I don’t think Liz Taylor was there, but he was so excited, and it’s something my sister says to make me laugh when I’m in a bad mood.

I also remember the premiere of the "Scream" video, I mean, who doesn’t? Amiright? MTv made SUCH a huge deal about it, it was total insanity, but kind of awesome. I miss that kind of build up for a video premiere, come on MTv. I digress.

The insanity that was the Martin Bashir interview sticks out in my head, as does the hilarious South Park episode that followed. I named a cooler “Blanket” in college because of this episode, which was loosely based on the craziness revealed in the Bashir interview. I’d go further to explain why my friends and I named a cooler, but it’s a long, uninteresting story that has little to do with Michael. I digress again. Sorry.

ANYWAY, because Annie had the Thriller CD, we listened to it all the time in the car—and of course learned all the words to every song, including “The Girl is Mine,” the definitive McCartney/Jackson collaboration. Annie always sang Michael’s verses, and I always sang Paul's. I say “sang” as if this doesn’t still happen—I don’t know who I’m kidding with that BS. I have to say that this is my most special Michael related memory, because my favorite moments with my sister are when we’re both in the mood to sing this silly song.

Anyway, I’ve always been something of a Michael fan. His place in music and pop culture history is undeniable, and until I wrote this, I didn’t realize how ever-present his persona and music was in my life. So, cheers to you, Michael.

Goodbye, Muppet style...

Oy vey, the last few weeks have been super crazy. I moved out of a house, participated in my brother's wedding festivities, prepared for a month long trip to the big city, and last but not least, moved away from Columbia, SC.

Whenever I leave NYC, or really anywhere, I think of this song and it makes me tear up a little--not gonna lie. Anyway, I thought it'd be a pretty appropriate song to post after my move to G'ville.

Anddd, to all of my Cola pals, I miss you already :).

I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)

Film for me in the early 90s, being that I was somewhere between 7-11 years old, was largely random kiddie cinema. I was partial to musical Disney films, as pretty much everyone of my generation was at one time or another. Occasionally I would have the privilege of being introduced to grown-up films whilst spending the night or weekend at my older sister's apartment. I know I watched lots of movies at her place but a few spring to mind as frequent viewing... Fried Green Tomatoes (1991), Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), which I remember explicitly being recorded off of pay per view, Interview with the Vampire (1994)It (1990), which I know we rented multiple times from Blockbuster because I remember being fascinated by it being two VHS tapes whose cases were held together by a rubber band, and most important Benny and Joon (1993), the first romantic comedy I ever loved. At 10 years old I'm pretty sure my entire idea of romantic love was the scene where Johnny Depp makes dinner rolls dance.

This bit of random nostalgia was brought to you by The Proclaimers' "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) which I somehow ended up at on YouTube:

Dirty Pop Cultured

So I had a little fit of 2001 nostalgia last night and ended up finding this video which I haven't thought about in forever.  I still remember watching the Making the Video for this one, along with the ones for Bye Bye Bye, and Britney's Oops I Did It Again and Stronger. I watched a shit ton of MTV. The weird beat boxing/pop art section at the end defies explanation. "The thing you've got to realize what we're doing is not a trend. We got the gift of melody. We gonna bring it til the end." It's hard to argue with that.

If there really is a bear...

I miss good old fashioned political campaign ads. Instead of slinging mud or talking about boring policy, candidates would confuse the crap out of voters with extended metaphors that made no sense until, eventually, the voting population would just give up. Take for example the following Reagan ad from '84 where he talks about how dangers bears are, because... bears attack people for honey or something? Maybe they're not really dangerous, the ad posits.Maybe they don't exist at all?!? After all some people can't see the bear. Invisible metaphor bears people! (Stephen Colbert would love this ad.)

Magic Dance

So Sabrina the Teenage Witch just came on television--don't judge, it's 2:30pm, and compared to the Rachel Ray show, this is the lesser of 2 evils--anyway, here is the opening for one of the later seasons:

Now, is it just me, or is Melissa Joan Hart like the WORST dancer in the world? seriously, I think I'm better, and I'm like, reallllly bad.

P.S. This is the third post in as many weeks on our "pop culture" blog that has mentioned MJH.

Take On Me Literally

Alright, this video is all over the interweb. I've seen it on several blogs and twice on my facebook neewsfeed already, but it's really worth reposting as it may be the funniest thing I've seen on the web in at least three days, maybe a week. For me this is the quintessential 80s video. I've seen it dozens of times, yet I've never noticed before just how weird it is. Pipe wrenches?

Also, the dude singing does a fantastic job. Well played, a-ha-imitating guy!

Camp Michael McDonald

I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for Michael McDonald. Actually, that’s a lie, I really can’t stand him—the Motown album he put out a few years ago that was on some ad campaign killed any tolerence I had left for him… I love the pre-McDonald Doobie Brothers, but anything post-MM really rubs me the wrong way. That being said, I always enjoy a good Michael McDonald joke, be it from The 40-Year Old Virgin, or from everyone’s favorite late night host, Conan O’Brien. I remember watching this video for the first time, my freshman year of college in the Patterson laundry room--it was when Conan episodes played the next day on Comedy Central, I wasn’t doing laundry at 12:30am. I digress, anyway, I spoke of this little sketch for years until I finally found it on You Tube and I could share it with the world.

Mid-90s Nostalgia Day! Sort of.

Laura and I were looking at our posts for the day and realized the images on the blog were Tommy Boy, Cop and a Half, and the SNICK logo, so since today became accidental mid-90s nostalgia day. I thought I'd post this gem. Also, We both love the way this kid says "mari JUAN a."

Origins of a Media Junkie - SNICK

I have always watched an ungodly amount of television, but most of my early childhood was spent watching children's programming, reruns on Nick and Nite, and whatever was on HBO, Showtime, and Cinemax. That all changed on August 15, 1992 with the debuts of SNICK, Nickelodeon's 2 hour Saturday night block of programming for children. It was my first introduction to appointment television. Every Saturday night for the next two years, at least those where the HBO Saturday Night Movie wasn't something I'd wanted to see but could never ask my parents to take me to, I would plop myself down in front of the TV with a Coke and a microwavable pizza.

Eventually this routine would include switching over to USA at 10 for Weird Science and Duckman, followed by 30 long minutes wherein I waited for the nightly news to pass so that SNL would finally come on. That's a 5 hour block of TV right there, every Saturday night. I was hooked.

I did some digging online and found plenty of YouTube based SNICK nostalgia, all of which is after the jump.

Snick Intro
The bumper the preceded each nights block of programming. Love to the Big Orange Couch!

Clarissa Explains It All Credits
Na naaa na na naaaa. This show used to annoy the shit out of my mother, which is mostly remarkable because I can't remember her ever disliking any other TV show ever. I also really distinctly remember having a crush on Sean O'Neal, which may actually predate what I previously thought to be my first crush.... Wesley Crusher (not Wil Wheaton, just Wesley).

Ren & Stimpy Credits
I have to admit that this show has always weirded me out a little. Though there's a special place in my heart for LOG and Powdered Toast Man... and that one episode where they're in space.

Are You Afraid of the Dark Credits
I very distinctly remember the doll in the opening credits scaring the shit out of me when I was nine. Freaky staring at the camera doll thing!

Commercials Aired During SNICK in 1993
Of all the things I found this is hands down my favorite. I remember most of these commercials verbatim. Feel free to ignore the random clip of the dudes around the 3 minute mark.

Sadly there were no embeddable Roundhouse credits available online.... but Retrojunk has a the theme and you can get to HERE.

Log!
I mean.... you've got to have log.

Things I'm Obsessed With: Peter Cetera's Glory of Love

It's difficult for me to express in words the depth of my obsession with this song and video, an obsession which began two years ago when it came on VH1 randomly and Laura and I recorded it on TiVo and preceded to watch it over and over again. It's not a stretch to say that "Glory of Love" is our jam.

The production values on this video are amazing, mixing clips from Karate Kid, Part II with footage of Cetera performing what has to be some of the whitest "choreography" ever put to film.  Seriously. Check out those jazz hands. I'm also mesmerized by his teeth, not sure what's going on there.

What began as an ironic obsession turned into genuine love for this song. So check it out, you won't be disappointed.

Lyrics, trivia, and a Glory of Love cover after the jump.

Glory of Love Fun Facts:
It peaked at #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart on August 2, 1986, remaining in that spot for two weeks. It also spent five weeks atop the US adult contemporary chart.

Laura and I performed this at karaoke two weeks ago and while I claimed it was smoke making my eyes water, I might've really teared up from the undeniable power of the Cetera.

It earned nominations in 1987 for an Academy Award for Best Song and a Golden Globe in the category of Best Original Song.

In 1987, every kid in America wanted one of those drum things that you beat by rubbing your hands together.

It was also nominated for a Grammy Award in 1987 for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Male Artist.

It was originally written for the movie Rocky IV and the producers passed on it?!? You know that one keeps them awake at night.

Soul Shattering Lyrics:
Tonight its very clear
As were both lying here
There's so many things I want to say
I will always love you
I would never leave you alone

Sometimes I just forget
Say things I might regret
It breaks my heart to see you crying
I dont wanna lose you
I could never make it alone

I am a man who will fight for your honor
Ill be the hero youre dreaming of
Well live forever
Knowing together that we
Did it all for the glory of love

You'll keep me standing tall
You'll help me through it all
Im always strong when youre beside me
I have always needed you
I could never make it alone

I am a man who will fight for your honor
I'll be the hero youve been dreaming of
We'll live forever
Knowing together that we
Did it all for the glory of love

Just
like a knight in shining armor
From a long time ago

Just in time I will save the day
Take you to my castle far awaaaay

I am a man who will fight for your honor
I'll be the hero youre dreaming of
We're gonna live forever
Knowing together that we
Did it all for the glory of love

We'll live forever
Knowing together that we
Did it all for the glory of love

We did it all for love
We did it all for love
We did it all for love
We did it all for love

New Found Glory - Glory of Love

Clearly artists will be covering this song for generations to come.

Blogging Doesn't Pay

Everyone once in a while I'm quite happy that I don't have large sums of cash, mostly because Think Geek.com would make me poor if I had any money. Case in point these sets of Nintendo Vinyl Restickable Wall Decals, a steal at $75 a piece. Seriously. $75.... for each set.

And yet, it would be so awesome to have a computer/gameroom with Donkey Kong on the walls... or health insurance.

How I Fell In Love With YouTube (or Instantaneous Nostalgia)

Every once in a while I find myself wondering, how did man survive before the internet? I mean how could one possibly live without being able to instantaneously access the music video for Weird Al's "White and Nerdy," the 40th most watched video on YouTube. Seriously, 40th. Of. All. Time. Suck on that Chris Crocker.

So I decided in the spirit of user control and instantaneous nostalgia that YouTube embodies, (remember last Thursday? *sigh* That was the day), to list the videos from the whole 3 years of YouTube's existence that have made me fall in love with Me, or Us, or You.... Tube.

In no discernible order:

The "I Like Turtles" Kid
Who doesn't like turtles? Also, this would be an AMAZING Halloween costume.

The rest of my picks, after the jump.

Flea Market Montgomery
"It's just like... it's just like... a mini-mall. Oh yeah!" I do a mean couch dance to this song.

Planet Unicorn - episode 2
Is this series of cartoons the story of my life? Probably not, but I'd love a planet full of unicorns. "It's okay to express your emotions. I'm a bird... goodbye!" Also, that creepy baby laugh is deeply disturbing.

Insane News Man
God this cracks me up every single time, also it's a testament to the power of proper punctuation.

Animal Identifaction FAIL
Seriously, Look... at that... horse

The Pot Brownie 911 Call
Newscasters should always get to have so much fun. Also, "I think we're dead."

Robin Sparkles - Let's Go to the Mall
I am, in fact, going to rock your body like it'd Canada Day

What What (In the Butt)
Sometimes words just fail me... though Butters' performance of this on South Park is one of the greatest events of the 21st Century.

Dramatic Chipmunk
Sure he may actually be a prairie dog, but there's no denying that this chipmunk is a drama queen of the highest order.

Appalachian State University is HOT HOT HOT
Van de Graff generators are always HOT HOT HOT, as are random black dudes playing keyboard solos. That's diversity right there.
