Pop Culture Tourettes: Clueless

As far as movie quoting goes, I’d say Clueless is for sure in my top five faves. I can usually find ways to sneak it into conversation to make everyone, or just me laugh. It’s a classic film, and should be on the AFI top 100.

“Well, I remember Mel Gibson accurately, and he didn't say that. That Polonius guy did.”
I really just say “that Polonius guy did.” Though most people understand that this is a Clueless reference, it baffles them nonetheless. This could be because it always comes from left field—I can’t imagine an occasion when it’s come up that I was discussing Hamlet.

“That's Ren and Stimpy. They're way existential.”
Obviously I use this quote whenever Ren and Stimpy come up, but many times I just say “they’re way existential” about whatever is being discussed. I always hope that someone will say, “do you have any idea what you’re talking about?” to which I will obviously respond, “No, do I sound like I do?” That has never happened unfortunately.

“Yeah. I can't find my Cranberries CD. I gotta go to the quad before anyone snags it.”
I say or think this whenever I hear a cranberries song. Also, I think this is the PERFECT facebook status.

“Vast improvement”
This phrase is actually part of my every day vernacular. It comes from the quote “not a total Betty, but a vast improvement.” I think the use is fairly obvious, but for consistency’s sake, I say it when something has been improved vastly.

The Rest After the Jump!

“Ohh Snickers”
This quote is used just like it is in the film, so if you haven’t seen it, A) you won’t understand why this is funny, and B) really? You haven’t seen Clueless? ANYWAY, If I, or someone else gets excited about something small that they see, and mentions it while talking about something else, then Annie or I will follow up that randomness with “ooh Snickers.” David says this sometimes too.

“I feel like such a heifer.”
This gets used when I feel like a heifer. Surprisingly, I haven’t memorized Cher’s list of food she ate that day, so I can’t use the whole quote when necessary.

“I broke in my purple clogs!”
If someone asks me what I did today, I jokingly say this. It’s also a great Facebook status. Have you ever wondered about these purple clogs though? I imagine they are pretty heinous.

“Let's do a lap before we commit to a location.”
Yeah, I actually say this at bars and parties. In all seriousness too.

“Wow, you guys talk like grown-ups!”
I say this when I have no idea what’s going on. I thought it quite often in the Flaherty discussions this year.

“That was way harsh, Tai.”
This comes up a lot—if someone is insulting me or someone else, even on television, be it a joke, or legit—if something said is below the belt “that was way harsh Tai” comes out.

“He's a disco-dancing, Oscar-Wilde-reading, Streisand ticket-holding friend of Dorothy... Ya know what I'm saying? He's gay.”
This is how I Describe David to everyone I know.

Costume Finding Woes

So since it’s October, and I’m no longer the hermit I was last year, I’ve been trying to figure out a great Halloween costume. The past 2 years have been good, I was a ceiling fan in 2006 (GO CEILINGS!), and a Blue Barracuda from Legends of the Hidden Temple last year. I like being clever, or having some sort of nostalgic costume—I’ve had people tell me my costume was the best at the party on several occasions, and unfortunately, I don’t think it’ll happen this year, but hopefully it won’t be a total bust. I usually like the option of wearing jeans or black pants with my outfit, but for some reason I feel like I should go all out this year…I don’t know, maybe because Halloween is on a Friday this year? Anyway, it doesn’t matter why I want a good costume, it just matters that I want a good costume.

I went to Target the other day, just to see what they had—and it was basically a bunch of bad looking, lame costumes—even the Ghostbusters costume was disappointing. The options I came up with this morning included Cher Horiwitz, Dr. Girlfriend, Wilma Flintstone, Betty Rubble, and Hermione Granger. I’ve narrowed it down to either Wilma or Hermione (I’ll let my blogees know when I decide). My story continues after the jump.

Cher H. would be awesome, but it’d be difficult to find one of her signature outfits, namely the yellow plaid one. Dr. Girlfriend would be great, but expensive, and everyone would thing I was going as Jackie O. Anyway, it’s hard finding a girl Halloween costume if you aren’t going for the slutty look—because if you don’t do the slut look, you end up looking like Willow Rosenberg at the Cultural Exchange dance or on any given Halloween…

When searching for “adult” anything, you get some crazy links, so “Adult Hermione Granger” probably wasn’t the smartest move. It took me to some crazy places on the internet—the images are proof enough, but the fan fic pages linked in this paragraph…kinda NSFW. I mean, honestly, Draco and Hermione Erotic fanfic? Come on! And that’s all I have to say about that (oooh, pop culture tourettes in action).

Pop Culture Tourettes: Tommy Boy

Earlier this week I told you about the Phenomenon of Pop Culture Tourettes. I explored this phenomenon with the help of Billy Madison because I was surprised (and a little ashamed) at how often I quoted that movie. Today I’m going to use Tommy Boy, a movie I proudly quote all the time. I first saw Tommy Boy while attending Furman Tennis camp with my cousin Libby, and I think I’ve seen it about 100 times since that fateful night 13 years ago. Wow, Tommy Boy is 13 years old? Crazy. This is a movie that my entire family quotes quite often; my brother believes he is entitled to $40.00 from the government every time he quotes this movie because it makes people happy.

Tommy Boy
“It doesn’t hurt here so much, or here, but right here”
I say this if someone is talking about a pain or bruise they have, and can’t pinpoint the position. You would be surprised how often this happens.

"Hmm he seems like a nice guy"
My sister Annie started saying this a lot this summer, so I started saying it a lot. Sometimes randomly, and sometimes if we are discussing someone that seems nice.

"It’s gotta be your bull"
Annie and I use this one if someone screws up what they are saying, or jumbles their words. It makes them feel stupid, and it makes us laugh.

"Richardd whats happening!?!"
Hmm, I say this if I’m unsure of the situation I’m in… It really confuses people, because I’m rarely around people named Richard.

"Did I catch a niner in there?"
I say this to people if they trail off.

"God I love that"
I say this in the Dan Akroydesque Chicago accent when I see something I like.

"Shut up Richard."
If someone corrects me or makes me feel stupid—again, it’s confusing because of the Richard thing.

"You could put six packs of be…soda in there"
Annie and I use this one a lot, I just can’t think of how.

More Quotes after the jump!

"House Keeping"
I usually say this when I knock on people’s doors

"Brothers don’t shake hands, brothers gotta hug!"
Clearly this is used when I hug people after they just try to shake hands...

"Hey, Prehistoric Forest!"
If I, or someone around me notices or makes a delayed comment about something in plain sight (you’d have to be familiar with the movie to understand why it’s a hilarious quote)…

"Heh heh, are you sure?"
Whenever I’m being sarcastic to someone about something that’s pretty darn obvious.

“I don't think so”
Whenever I say “I don’t think so,” I say it like the flight attendant from this movie.

"Try an association like, uhhh... Let's say the average person uses ten percent of their brain. How much do you use? One and a half percent. The rest is clogged with malted hops and bong resin."
Sounds funny, but whenever someone actually says 10%, or 1 ½% , I just say this. It rarely has any meaning.

"Oh yeah, I buy brake pads off him. I thought we were watching cartoons."
This is actually the quote Denny used when he mentioned the $40.00 thing. I can’t remember how it came up, but it was funny, so I figured I should mention it.

"We’ve still got that meatlover’s pizza in the trunk"
Whenever someone brings up a positive point in a crappy situation.

"Aww, I’ve interrupted Happy Time"
Just something random that I say…

"That was from Star Wars."
If someone/I reference something that no one gets. The great thing is that the reference doesn’t have to be Star Wars, it can be anything. If people don’t realize that I’m quoting Tommy Boy when saying “That was from Star Wars” they think that whatever was just quoted/referenced before that was in fact from Star Wars. Was that clear? Probably not. Sorry.

"Screw you! Screw all of you!"
Whenever I’m exclaiming Anger at someone, or a group of people.

"Now let's see what happens when you're driving with the "other guy's" brake pads”
"And the medic gets out and says, "Oh my God"."
"All because you want to save a couple extra pennies."
Those quotes are from the same little monologue. When I was little my family’s computer had a lot of random movie quotes/monologues downloaded, (keep in mind this was 10 years prior to YouTube), and we used to listen to/ memorize these quotes, this was one of them, so I just recite it sometimes, but those are the 3 I use most often.

"Do you validate?
Whenever I need my parking validated. Or I say it to Annie sometimes to make her laugh.

"That's when the whores come in."
Whenever my family’s brakepad company is about to go under, bringing the whole town under—because that’s when the whores come in.

There are soo many more, but I thought I’d bore/weird out you, my loyal readers, if I went on too long.

Pop Culture Tourettes: Billy Madison

If you know me, and I’m assuming you do because our readership isn’t that widespread, then you’ve probably noticed that most of what I say comes from either a movie or a television show. Sometimes I try manage to successfully incorporate these quotes into the conversation I’m having, but many times I just randomly say things that have nothing to do with anything being said. David calls this phenomenon “Pop Culture Tourettes.”

For the past week or so I’ve been trying to catch myself in the act, so I could share some of my most quoted movies and tv shows with my blog. This exercise has taught me that the movies I quote most often are kind of bizarre, and this might have to be a daily post, because I think maybe 90% of what I say is unoriginal. The first movie I’ll mention/explore in this series is Billy Madison, because oddly enough, this one comes up daily. See how I manage to use these quotes after the jump.

Billy Madison Quotes (in no particular order):

Normal Conversation Quotes: These are quotes that on paper, seem normal enough, and often times they aren’t random, I actually use them to progress the conversation, but I have to give Billy Madison Credit because I usually say them in some sort of weird voice or inflection.

“There was something I was supposed to do today”

“I’d rather have a beer”

“You know something, you suck!”

“That is Correct”

“So sorry to interrupt!”

“No I will not make out with you!”
Clearly I use the last one a lot, you know, because people want to make out with me all the time.

Totally random things that I say—these are a little more difficult to squeeze into conversation, but I manage somehow…

“Eric is Pregnant”
I use this one if someone says something like, “I’ve got big news,” or “did you hear?”

“Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.”
I say this, though not verbatim (usually), when someone gets an answer wrong, or does something dumb.

“Don't put it out with your boots, Ted.”
I just say this to my friend Lauren a lot. And sometimes randomly when there is an awkward silence.

“Well, maybe if you told me they were delicious Triscuit crackers I could have enjoyed them with you.”
Whenever someone denies me delicious Triscuit crackers, I have to say this. And so should you.

“I thought I was your snack pack”
I don’t really know how I fit this one in, but I know that I do somehow, because I can picture myself saying it…

“T-T-T-Today Jr!”
Whenever some kid stutters…

“O’Doyle Rules”
Again, I’m not sure how I use it, I just know I say it sometimes…

If you can think of any Movies or TV Shows I quote a lot, leave them in the comments!
